Understanding the architecture of trees

Trees are unique entities; traditional depictions of trees, with a central trunk and branches radiating in all directions, do not accurately represent their true form. It’s crucial to acknowledge the limitations of these visual representations. Oversimplified artistic renditions can lead to unfounded assumptions about the architectural structure of trees. This project encouraged us to observe and document the interactions of tree branches with their physical environment, particularly in their quest for sunlight. While the top view typically obscures tree branches with dense foliage, our goal was to reveal the underlying structure, akin to visualizing the skeletal system within the human body – a process of unveiling the unseen. The plan and section were developed by tracing merged photographs. A series of images were captured and then pieced together to construct comprehensive views of tree canopies.
